"The computer is no longer their main entertainment hub"
With the introduction and increasing popularity of smartphones and iPods etc, I now spend little time listening to music on my computer. Although all of my music is stored on my iTunes, I rarely use it to listen to my collection of music and instead opt to listen to my singles/albums on my iPhone or my iPod. I think the reason that the computer is no longer the main use of entertainment regarding music is because for dexterity and accessibility purposes, it is much easier to listen to music via a portable and smaller device.
However, I do listen to music on Youtube on my laptop more frequently than I use my iTunes. I tend to listen to songs that I have not yet or do not intend to download, as it is a free and simple way of listening to music. In addition, due to technological convergence, I can now access Youtube on my iPhone and can therefore listen to music on it virtually anywhere.
According to statistics, 65% of people listen to music through their mp3/iPod every day. I am a part of that 65% as I listen to music every day, and most commonly use my iPod to do so. Statistics also say that only 18% of people listen to music via a CD player on a daily basis. Although I do have a CD player, I do not listen to it on a daily basis, as it is much easier and less hassle to plug in my earphones; I can listen to music at any place and any time.
Approximately, I have only 100 songs stored on my iPhone. This is due to the fact that I had little storage left on my device and had to delete many songs. However, on my iPod and computer, I have around 900 songs. Although this is a considerable amount of songs, compared to the number of songs I have on my iPhone, it is still a small amount. This concurs with the research that boys have a larger music collection than girls:
I also have a considerably smaller collection of songs on my iPod than most people have.
The vast majority of my songs have been bought legally, either through digital downloads or physical CDs. However, I do have some songs that have been downloaded illegally, too. I am not a frequent music buyer which could perhaps explain why I choose to buy my music legally; I don't spend as much money as those who download more music.
In addition, music is not my preferred form of entertainment. I spend most of my money on films or magazines etc.
