Research: Chosen Artist and Album

Nina Nesbitt

Name: Nina Lindberg Nesbitt
DOB: 11 July, 1994, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Genres: Acoustic, pop, rock.

To gain exposure, Nesbitt began posting videos of her singing and playing guitar onto Youtube. Nesbitt can play three instruments; guitar, piano and flute.

Nesbitt first rose to prominence in the music scene when she was invited by Ed Sheeran to support him on his tour. She says of meeting Sheeran, "It was just kind of a like a chance meeting. I said I really aspire to be a singer-songwriter, I'm a big fan of his work." She added, "And then he was like 'oh do you play guitar?' And I said 'yeah' and then he was like 'okay, play me a song then'. So I played him a song and went on tour with him, and that kind of kickstarted everything in the UK."

Nesbitt was also invited to support Example after he heard her cover of his song 'Stay Awake'.

Nesbitt has said that her friends call her a 'people-watcher' - her observations often become the subject of her songs. For example, Nesbitt says the song on her album Peroxide, 'Mr.C', is about "the standard guy in the club who thinks by flashing his cash you'll fancy him - but all you want is a free drink!"

She also incorporates elements of social commentary in her songs, arguably most notable in her song 'Selfies'. Nesbitt discussed the origin of the song's conception, "We were talking about how people have started taking selfies and living through a fake persona online. And when people are feeling low they often post pictures and seek assurance that they're alright."

Nesbitt released her first extended play titled 'Live Take', where every song on the EP was recorded in front of a live audience in December 2011.

Her second EP, 'The Apple Tree' was on 23 April 2012. Tracks included on the EP are; 'The Apple Tree', 'Seesaw', 'Hold You', 'Only Love', 'Make Me Love'.

'Boy' was Nesbitt's third EP and was released on December 6, 2012. The song 'Boy' from the EP also served as Nesbitt's first single to be released in the UK, and it peaked at number 139.

Nesbitt's fourth EP, 'Stay Out' featured the title track, which is Nesbitt's highest charting single to date, reaching number 21 in the UK singles chart. 'Stay Out' was also included in Nesbitt's debute album 'Peroxide'.

'Way In The World' was released on 21 July 2013 and is Nesbitt's fifth EP. It includes the songs, 'Way In The World', 'Brit Summer (Demo)', 'Not Me', and 'Spiders'.

All of Nesbitt's EPs, and her album 'Peroxide' have been released by the record label Universal Music Group.

Nesbitt released her debut album 'Peroxide' in February 2014. The album featured mainly new material, but it did also include songs from her previous EPs.

Nesbitt collaborated with producers such as Jake Gosling, who has produced tracks for artists including Ed Sheeran and One Direction. She also co-wrote the song 'Mr. C' with pop star Lily Allen.

In the mid-weeks chart, the album took the top spot, albeit with a small lead. However, on the Sunday when the final chart positions were announce, the album only charted at number 11. The album did however debut at number 1 on the Scottish Albums Chart.

The album was released to generally positive reviews from critics, receiving a score of 56 on Metascore. The Telegraph gave the album a positive review, awarding it 4 out of 5 stars. They compared her to American artist Taylor Swift and said, "Nesbitt has toughened up, shifting towards a sleeker, snappier, hookier sound."

Not all reviews were positive. NME awarded the album a 3/10, stating that it is "pop so sugary that it'll rot your teeth." They also compared Nesbitt to Swift, but remarked that she could not achieve Swift's wit.

She began to tour the album around various festivals, and also played shows in London, Manchester and her hometown Edinburgh. Nesbitt stated that she is simultaneously recording her next album whilst touring 'Peroxide.' She has stated that watching a lot of films has influenced the material for her new album, as well as life experiences and encounters, but added that she's trying to do something "a little bit different" with the next album. Nesbitt has also expressed an interest in collaborating with an artist who specialises in a different genre to her, citing the collaboration between Coldplay and Avicii as an inspiration.
