Construction/Production: First Session

On 28th January, I completed part of my filming for my music video 'Selfies'. I booked the filming space, my school theatre, for 4:15 p.m. However, the event that was taking place in there from 3 p.m. extended beyond the time I had organised to commence production. This resulted in delayed filming time, and I was unable to begin directing my actor in front of the camera as quickly as I would have liked. In addition, the form I filled out to securely book the room stated that I would be given technical support with the lighting, although the technical support were not informed of this. I did receive help in regards to the light and sound, but I expected greater efficiency and reliability from the people who handled my booking form. Along with this miscommunication and ineffective organisation, the poor time keeping of the people occupying the space before myself lead to the delayed production. Plus, after the people exited the space, the theatre chairs had to be put away and the panel that created a separation between the theatre and drama room had to be disassembled. Unfortunately, this subsequently meant that I had less time to record footage than I had hoped for.

The setting up of the scene and manoeuvring of props till they were satisfactory also proved to be a laborious and extensive task. A wide net had to be attached safely and securely to four large wooden bases, and polaroids attached to invisible wire had to be hung from different lengths from the net. Whilst attaching the polaroids to the net, they would swing around and the side with the image on would be facing the white back drop, exposing the opposite side's bare frame. This was quickly amended by sticking another polaroid onto the back, so which ever way the photos swung, a photo featuring my actor would be facing the camera. The supportive frame had to be constructed to the correct height before the white back drop could be place upon it. The white back drop had many creases in it which I was unable to iron out. The creases were visible on camera:

However, I can attempt to amend this issue during the post - production process, or even repeat the filming again until I achieve a quality and satisfactory result. Plus, during certain scenes, a shadow could be seen across the top of the white back drop:

Once again, this is an issue that will most likely have to be fixed with re - shooting. Another problem that I encountered was during a particular scene; although it was not in my planning or animatic, I bought and inflated balloons which were thrown by unseen people off camera at my actor. During one shot, a part of the theatre was visible, as was a person who was throwing balloons:

I noticed this error after quickly examining the footage and was able to do another take, which was successful in not exposing any other people or revealing any evidence of the location. Another scene I had to set up was the piñata scene, where my actor repeatedly hits the piñata; a strong piece of cord/string was attached across two of the wooden bases, and the piñata was threaded through it. Similarly, this was a laborious process to ensure that the wooden bases would not fall over or endanger the safety of my actor or anyone else present.

During filming, I was made aware of the fact that I had to leave the premises at 7 p.m. as it was organised to be utilised by somebody else. I was previously unaware of this and I was placed under further time constraints. Although a member of staff was able to re- locate the people who intended to use the room after me, I was told by a member of the site team that I had to be finish by 7:30 p.m. Due to this factor, I was unable to record any evidence of my filming - people I had surrounding me were too busy helping me with the sound, lighting and scene/prop construction to delay the production to take photos of me filming/constructing. However, I will be booking the theatre space again to record and will ensure that I collate evidence of the production.

Although the production did not go as smoothly as I hoped, I did film some effective shots, such as the slow motion throwing of balloons at my actor. I intend to book the theatre space again for filming as soon as possible so I can record again swiftly. To improve, I need to persevere and continually ask those handling my form whether everything is in place. I may have to re - film some scenes and complete other shots that I did not have to time to shoot because of the time constraints placed on me. Ideally, I will also amend the creased white back drop and hopefully enter the booked space at the designated time. Finally, I will be sure to evidence the production process.
